Capriles, Homophobia, Anti-Semitism and Systemic Violence: Understanding the Venezuelan Elections
By Rachael Boothroyd, Venezuelanalysis.com, April 5th 2012
In the past few years, certain events have mounted serious challenges to what were previously held to be “universal truths” by Western society. The ongoing financial crisis has generated debate on a global scale about the future and viability of capitalism, just as the governments which continue to prop up that capitalist system, in spite of popular revulsion, have contributed to a weakening of the notion that Western representative political systems are the paradigm of democracy.
As hundreds of thousands of European citizens take to the streets to protest against the economic restructuring of their economy and the associated police brutality required to deliver austerity measures at the end of a bayonet, and as bankers and their lobbying institutions continue to crack the whip over national governments to steamroller these reforms through, the hoax of Liberal democracy in the face of the power of the market has been tangibly laid bare for all to see.
Venezuela is perhaps one of the best examples of how the fallout produced from the collision between a crisis of capitalism and a crisis of representative democracy can produce popular revolution, which can seep out of these cracks and begin to create something new. It is this fact which explains why the international media, and at this historical juncture in particular, so manically seeks to discredit the Chavez government and the embryo of an alternative society that it represents in Venezuela.
With the Venezuelan elections now looming, and with Chavez’s approval ratings stubbornly hovering around the 57% mark, it would seem that the international media has stepped up its “disinformation” campaign against the Bolivarian revolution with renewed urgency, producing the kind of biased, baseless and manipulative stories about the “persecution” of opposition presidential candidate, Capriles Radonski, that have been filling the corporate press’ Latin American correspondence pages for weeks.
For the past two months, articles in the international press have been denouncing what they refer to as a “smear campaign” waged against 39 year old Capriles. Various news groups such as Reuters and the Huffington Post claim that the opposition candidate has fallen victim to “government-inspired hate” and negative remarks about everything from his sexuality, to his “privileged” background and Jewish roots.
Whilst Abraham Foxman, Director of the New York-based Anti-Defamation League is quoted in the Huffington Post as saying that, “blatant and persistent anti-Semitism is used by President Chavez and his government apparatus as a divisive political tool,” the UK’s the Independent was actually forced to retract a piece entitled, “Chavez’s homophobic rant against challenger”, stating that “we now accept that President Chavez did no such thing. We are happy to set the record straight."
Although these claims were originally manufactured outside of Venezuela, it didn’t take long for the national opposition press to latch on to them and start reproducing them ad nauseum - despite the fact that these allegations are at best gross exaggerations, and at worst, total fabrication.
Without a doubt, the most problematic issue presented by these claims is the media’s attempts to categorise this “campaign” against Capriles as some kind of coordinated government strategy, or a “steady barrage of attacks” against Capriles from the “Chavez camp,” according to an article featured in the UK’s Guardian. It would be helpful if these news corporations provided evidence of these widespread attacks so that they might be refuted, but they do not, and instead, prefer to just quote endless streams of opposition politicians and U.S. funded NGOs as if they were more of an authority on Venezuelan politics than the government, Venezuelan social movements or the 65% of people that voted for Chavez in 2006.
Of the vast amount of articles appearing in the mainstream news berating the government for its victimisation of Capriles, only two concrete examples are actually put forward by their authors as proof of this persecution. Unsurprisingly, neither confirms the remotest existence of a state-inspired “hate” campaign.
The allegation that Capriles is being targeted by the government because of his sexuality has been attributed to comments made by talk-show host Mario Silva on his programme “the Razorblade”, a political satire programme which generally deals with the underhand and often illegal practices of the political opposition. Silva does not usually find himself in want of material.
Since it began, the show has not only unearthed opposition plans to overthrow the government, but it has also uncovered numerous activities aimed at generating general destabilisation within Venezuela, including plans by news site Globovision to incite disturbances throughout the nation’s prisons last year during the El Rodeo prison riots. In this particular episode Silva announced that in 2000, Capriles was found by policeman Jesús Teodoro Hernández engaged in a sexual act with another man in a public route in his car. At the time Capriles was mayor of Baruta, a position which he then used to cover up the event, avoid any charges and have the policeman in question subjected to a disciplinary process. This information was all in fact released by Hernandez.
Whereas Hernandez states that he wished to make the story public in order to clear his name and to halt the “barrage of threats” that he had been receiving, Silva maintains that he was covering the story in order to show how “power is used” and to demonstrate how “filthy power is”, whilst saying that it has absolutely “nothing to do with the condition of Capriles Radonski’s sexuality”.
Despite this, the media has magically managed to convert this revelation into, not just a case of homophobia, but to a state directed anti-gay campaign against Capriles himself, drawing on criticism from numerous U.S. LGBT groups, such as the “Christian Gays,” who comment that this is “typical of a dictator’s strategy” – blissfully unaware of the ironic fact that it was Capriles, and not Chavez, who abused his power to personally victimise a citizen in spite of national law.
Given that the corporate press are currently involved in an all out media war, which even more ironically equates to a smear campaign against the Chavez government, to depict the “fresh-faced, socially conscious Capriles” as whiter than white, it is no small wonder that they haven’t decided to cover the event in its entirety: Capriles’ little escapade followed by what could certainly described as an abuse of power hardly makes for great material.
This from an opposition which unashamedly attempts to denigrate Chavez in any possible way, from poking fun at his Afro-descendent features and his “common” way of speaking to his cancer-induced baldness, is a frankly breathtaking level of hypocrisy.
Anyone who has a television or a radio in Venezuela knows that, where the U.S. backed Venezuelan opposition are involved, there are no holds barred. Racism, physical weakness or classism, anything goes if it means getting the “monkey” out of power. In fact, insulting the president has reached such levels in the country that it is now completely normalised. Opposition media channels may as well just dispense with words entirely and simply dedicate 5 hours each day to showing clips of Chavez singing on Alo Presidente and having the entire sum of their viewers hurling packets of Mercal flour at the television. It would be like mass catharsis.
For instance, last month rightwing television station Globovision broadcast a text message from a viewer stating that he wished that “Chavez would die already and leave us in peace”. It is unthinkable that such an offensive comment, made in such poor taste and relating to a president currently suffering from cancer, would be broadcast in the United States or the United Kingdom. Yet in Venezuela the same rules do not apply.
Nor is the opposition a stranger to homophobia. In 2010, opposition “comedian” Emilio Lovera brought out “President Island” with Juan Andrés Ravell (son of Alberto Federico Ravell, former Director of Globovision) and Oswaldo Graziani, a cartoon based on the program “Lost”, where all of the Latin American presidents find themselves shipwrecked on an island together. The series frequently showed Chavez and Morales locked in steamy clinches all as part of Morales’ homo-erotic fantasies.
Despite these blatantly homophobic references, the Christian Gays were nowhere to be seen when President Island hit the internet, and nor were the numerous U.S. human rights NGOs, who have now leapt to the defence of Capriles and his rights to have sex in a public car park and not be punished accordingly like the rest of ordinary Venezuelan citizens, principally because his status allows him the ability to circumvent any associated and undesirable court summons that could result from his personal endeavours.
However, rampant hypocrisy by the opposition should never be used as an excuse to engage in homophobia within the revolution, as numerous progressive grassroots organisations within the revolution have pointed out. Although Mario’s comments can certainly be criticised for reducing politics to its most base level, and they can hardly be described as the debate of revolutionary ideas, to suggest that they are somehow indicative of a consistent and orchestrated repressive state policy which encourages homophobia against its opponents is absurd.
Whilst homophobia continues to be a serious cultural problem within Venezuela, as it does within Latin America as a whole, LGBT groups are growing and are increasingly present in the public eye; organising marches and awareness campaigns which did not exist before Chavez was elected.
Whereas the first gay Pride March was held in 2000, just a year after Chavez took office, they have since been held annually under police protection and with representatives of the state present. Equally, whilst all types of discrimination are outlawed in the 1999 Constitution, the government tried to amend this in 2007 to specifically include discrimination based on sexual orientation; although this was narrowly defeated in a national referendum as part of a broader set of constitutional reforms. In July 2009, the National Assembly also voted to pass a bill for gender equality through the first round of discussion. If passed, this law would recognise civil unions, the rights of cohabiting same sex couples to equal economic and civil benefits as heterosexual partnerships, and recognise the rights of those who "change their sex by surgical or other procedures... to be recognized by their identity and to obtain or modify documents associated with their identification”.
Paradoxically, whilst the revolution continues to grapple with the issue of homophobia both internally and externally, the opposition barely manages to throw together anything that even resembles a coherent gender equality or LGBTI proposal.
In a somewhat predictable and repetitive move, the opposition and international media is also claiming that Capriles, who is a practising Catholic, is the victim of an anti-Semitic campaign due to his Jewish heritage. Again, the “state orchestrated” campaign being decried by the media is nothing more than a single opinion piece published on a state news website called “The Enemy is Zionism”.
The article cites Radonski’s meeting with CAIV, a pro-Zionist group in Venezuela, as proof of his sympathy to the Israeli lobby and argues that Capriles will be the U.S. and by extension Israel’s right hand man in Venezuela, should he somehow manage to become president this year. In the article, Zionism is mentioned 8 times, the bourgeoisie and oligarchy 5 times and Judaism just once, to describe the religion of Capriles’ parents and why they were forced to flee from Poland.
Apart from this, the author does not again mention Judaism and dedicates the rest of the piece to an analysis of Zionism, which he cites as a political ideology that “hides behind a religious and nationalist discourse, trying to conceal its colonial character and its clearly political goals, its racial superiority, which are profoundly hegemonic. Zionism was born to put into practise imperialism’s plans in the Arab world and to strategically place an operations base in the region. It is, without a doubt, the ideology of terror.”
Clearly this statement can be debated, just as you can debate the founding principles of the United States of America and how they continue to be reproduced today, but what is evident is that what is being debated is the political role of Israel, and not the Jewish religion.
Even within the anti-Chavez psychosis that afflicts the majority of Venezuela’s opposition, it is still quite a leap to equate this one opinion piece with a state coordinated smear campaign against Capriles’ Jewish heritage, if not just for the simple fact that Judaism and Zionism are quite simply not the same thing. Where the former is a 3000 year old religion, the latter (generally speaking) has come to be associated with a historically and geographically specific political movement that explicitly defends the interests of the Israeli state.
Neither Chavez nor the author of the RNV article are the first to condemn the quite frankly genocidal practices of the Israeli state with regards to the Palestinian people. Israel’s expansionist policies have been criticised by sources as diverse as Amnesty International to ex-President of the Unites States Jimmy Carter, as well as by Jewish academics Noam Chomsky and Norman Finkelstein, or U.S. based Jewish rabbi, Yisroel Dovid Weiss, who just last month accused the state of Israel of intimidating anyone standing in opposition to its “blatant inhuman treatment of the Palestinians” by labelling them anti-Semitic.
Pointing out that thousands of Palestinians have been directly killed by the Israeli state; that tens of thousands more have been seriously injured, that the Israeli occupation of Gaza and the West Bank is criminal, that Palestinians are forcibly removed from their arable land so that both the Israeli state and private Israeli enterprises can farm it and export its produce to Europe at a vast profit, is not anti-Semitic. Nor is it anti-Semitic to argue that, from a geo-political perspective, the U.S. has strategically converted itself into the guardian of this, as John Pilger has labelled it, “terrorist state,” and has committed both its military and economic resources to ensuring the survival of this particular form of state terrorism as a means of entrenching U.S. interests in the region; with Israel having received more military aid from the U.S. than any other country. Clearly, rather than this being a religious issue, it is a human rights issue taking place firmly within a specific political and economic context, and what been posited as an anti-Semitic attack against the man Capriles was in fact an attack on the interests of the kleptocratic class to which Capriles belongs. A class which allies itself with U.S. imperialism on all fronts, monopolised power and politics in Venezuela until 1998, and which continues to be the elephant in the room when it comes to representations of Venezuela politics in the mainstream press.
Carpiles and Venezuela’s political clique
Whilst the abuse of power or the murdering of Palestinians doesn’t seem to present an issue to the international press, evidently pointing out the perpetrators of these acts, or even pointing out their very existence is frowned upon, and is either met with a wall of silence or a smear campaign masquerading under the banner of civil liberties.
By fixating on exceptionally liberal notions of violence in order to depict Venezuela as Latin America’s Bahrain, the mainstream media has once again totally ignored another kind of violence, which, incidentally, is currently ripping up the West’s social fabric in an attempt to save a now totally defunct financial system. It is this often ignored systemic violence, inherent to the financial system in which we live today, that is crucial to understanding the Venezuelan socio-political reality in the run up to elections.
Although Capriles and his press entourage would like to depict him as a charismatic peace-maker or a Lula inspired social-democrat, he is in fact neither of these things.
Firstly, Capriles is not a democrat; in 2002 during the attempted coup against Chavez, he was part of a group which stormed the Cuban embassy, cutting off their electricity and threatening them with violence.
Equally, despite the fact that he is again lauded by the international press for being “young and independent,” with the advantage of not being viewed as part of Venezuela’s traditional elite, 39 year old Capriles represents “Unity Venezuela” and is part of the “Roundtable of Democratic Unity”. Ironically, neither of these groups are unified, except for their support for the neo-liberal economic model and their hatred for Chavez, and nor are they democratic.
These two groups are made up of Venezuela’s traditional political clique, with Capriles signature being just one on the coalition’s manifesto, the others including political dinosaurs such as Henry Ramos Allup of the Democratic Action party (AD); politicians who overthrew the democratically elected government in 2002, murdered around 60 ordinary citizens in the space of 2 days, ripped up the country’s democratic institutions, shut down the country’s oil industry in order to physically starve out the country and continues to engage in violent activities aimed at destabilisation; all the while crying “freedom of expression violations” to the international media. Capriles is not independent of this bloc, but rather he is a fully integrated economic, political and historic member.
Not only was he previously a member of Venezuela’s Christian Democrat party COPEI, one of the two ruling parties which upheld the exclusionary power sharing pact of Punto Fijo between 1958-1998, (with the other being AD) but his family also happens to own a vast business empire. This empire includes cinema complexes and private media outlets under the “Cadena Capriles” chain, which by its own admission is the “lead” media group on the Venezuelan market, meaning that the repressed and persecuted Capriles has his very own political mouthpiece in the form of Ultimas Noticias, one of the most widely read newspapers in the country.
It is fortunate for Capriles that this mouthpiece actually adopts the form of the written word, because, contrary to the surreal assertions perpetuated by the international press that Capriles is in fact a charismatic speaker, his oratory skills are akin to a junior newsreader on their first day.
This was emphatically demonstrated last month when he wandered blindly into a xenophobic and extremely ill advised Prince Philip style blunder, but tragically minus the flair and delivery. In an unfortunate attempt to attack the government’s latest economic policy to control the prices of basic commodities, and to emulate Chavez’s relaxed way of relating to the general public, Capriles managed to accuse all Europeans of not wearing deodorant. The “joke”, which barely managed to draw a courteous laugh from the majority of those present, went as follows.
“The price of deodorant has gone down...now deodorant doesn’t cost as much...the problem now is that we’ll all be like the Europeans! We won’t use deodorant! Because there isn’t going to be deodorant! They might have been able to do this, but we Venezuelans have a different vision.”
Clearly Capriles is not Bill Hicks, and nor is this the kind of political rhetoric that will fire citizens up into a frenzy, with the exception of the usual hardcore Chavez hating Venezuelan rightwing, who can be relied on at pretty much any time of the day and regardless of the speaker’s oratory calibre.
The “Third Way:” kick starting private enterprise whilst maintaining social missions
If his political discourse is singularly lacking in vision and content, his actual programme is even more so. Because of the vague wording used in his electoral campaign, such as his campaign slogan “there is a path”, there is a common misconception that Capriles doesn’t have a clear cut political programme. This is in fact a fallacy.
Although once upon a time he subscribed to far-right political doctrine in the form of the Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property (TFP) and then through COPEI, Capriles’ current political platform could broadly be shelved under the rubric of the mythical “third way,” which, despite the broad and ambiguous nature that it was rightly accused of when debated within academic circles initially, as a historic and practical experience has revealed itself to be; the deregulation of market controls, the increasing provision of limited social programs by the private sector and severely decreased civil liberties. This is unsurprising given the fact the third way and the corporate state were first propagated by Mussolini, but more surprising if you consider how the ambiguous political proposal was unflinchingly embraced by “Liberal” politicians and media.
According to Reuters, Capriles political project is as follows; “free-market economics with a strong social conscience” - which is quite a disorientating sentence. Whilst you’re still trying to climb out of the 1990s time warp within which it is embedded, with the same old tired third-way rhetoric that dominated the political landscape until 2008, or at least until the end of history ended, you are simultaneously assaulted with what appears to be the non-ironic juxtaposition of “free market economics” and “social conscience”. In Venezuela, it immediately brings to mind a common saying; “What you create with your hands; you destroy with your feet”.
What Capriles is proposing is the privatisation of the country’s economy with minimal state intervention and just enough social investment to prevent riots. He is proposing charity as a means to compensate for the socio-economic structures which subject the majority of the population to poverty and wage slavery, or as Zizek has described it; the “the humanitarian mask hiding the face of exploitation”. All the while, he is giving the thumbs up to the system which allows him to come home to a veritable fortune each night after a hard day schmoozing the nation’s barrios, which are ironically the less than glamorous flip side of these structural inequalities for the majority of Venezuelans.
Despite the fact that Capriles is being presented as Venezuela’s answer to ex-Brazilian president Lula da Silva, what he is proposing in fact is more comparable to Brazil’s reformist experiment under Cardoso, which tellingly led to the greatest denationalisation process in Brazil’s history.
Most ironically perhaps, is that Chavez himself also purported the politics of the third way when he took office, but was in fact radicalised after being confronted with staunch resistance from capitalists operating in the country; who had no interest in working with the government to create a “nice and socially responsible capitalism,” precisely because the logic of capital is predicated on constant and expanding accumulation. It wasn’t long before Chavez found that, as Istvan Meszaros has said, as the contradictions inherent in capitalism become more pronounced, “the political system is incapable of responding because the political system operates under the ever narrowing constraints of capital. Capital as such doesn’t allow any more margin for manoeuvre.”
It is unlikely that this Cardoso style third-way politics will be a winning ticket in Venezuela, and not just because this political project has so catastrophically tanked across the globe.
Despite the accusations of clientelism often levelled at the Chavez government, Venezuela’s oil economy has long been the axis upon which the state’s relationship with civil society is predicated. As Fernando Coronil has argued, since the discovery of oil in the 1920s in Venezuela, the concept of democracy has been defined, not just by citizens’ ability to participate in formal representative democratic processes, but also on having a certain amount of access to the proceeds of the country’s oil wealth.
Such a political legacy means that it would be near impossible to win the presidential elections in Venezuela based on a hard-right ticket, with neo-liberal economic restructuring of the economy only managing to get through at the end of the 1980s because of Carlos Andres Perez’s now famous “about turn,” following an election campaign waged on a specifically anti-IMF platform.
Unfortunately for Capriles, however, Venezuelans also have firsthand experience of what happens when capitalism goes to the wall during a cyclical crisis under a Cardoso-type third way. They know full well that when this happens, the minimal protection of the state, the charitable mask of food handouts, free education and employment are the first thing to go, thrown off quicker than you can say International Monetary Fund and leaving you with the naked repression of the state. Millions of Venezuelans are aware and continue to remember this painful fact because there are still bullet holes in the capital’s barrios which act as a dark testament to this reality: when capitalism goes to the wall, so does the state’s ammunition, and if you happen to be in the way, well, there are others to swell the ranks of the informal economy.
In short, whilst Capriles has been coerced into offering capitalism with removable frilly edges as a result of the political shift brought about by the revolutionary process, Chavez is offering structural change as the only way to address the systemic violence which has historically afflicted Venezuela’s subaltern classes.
More aware than the politicians?
It would appear then that despite the selective tours that Capriles has undertaken in the country’s poorer sectors, he has failed to grasp the same levels of awareness and consciousness as the people who live there. Because yet again the opposition’s political ticket is based upon hitting the rewind button. Either ignorant or in denial with regards to the country’s profound social and political changes of the past 13 years, the opposition has also has failed to recognise that the country has undergone a dialectical radicalisation process since Chavez took office, which not only cannot be reversed so easily, but which has also rendered the whole project of the third way totally and utterly obsolete. This is obvious in the polls, where support for Capriles is consistently placed around the 30% mark. When compared to the last opposition presidential candidate Manuel Rosales, who managed to gain 36% of the vote on the 2006 elections, it is quite clear that the opposition has once again failed to increase its core base of voters.
I was recently told by one Venezuelan citizen at a political rally, where we were discussing Chavez’s health and whether it would affect the upcoming presidential elections, that “here, the people are more politically aware than the politicians”. Capriles and his campaign are like a perverse caricature of this statement. Although he appears to have convinced Reuters that he is the man to “take on Chavez” with his t-shirt wearing credentials, he has failed to convince the majority of the Venezuelan population that his political programme for masked privatisation and laissez-faire economics with limited social investment to act as a band aid, represents anything other than a leap backwards to an epoch of privatisation, laissez-faire economics and limited social investment to act as a band aid.
This was made abundantly clear when I happened to have the pleasure of seeing Capriles launching his political campaign in the middle-class zone of Santa Monica in Caracas. Despite the upper class nature of the area and despite the numerous cars and vans decked out in balloons and blaring music from mammoth speakers, the reception was surprisingly lukewarm. Watching the spectacle along with some other bemused onlookers, I got chatting to a Venezuelan man in his mid-thirties.
“I’m not with the government, but these people are ridiculous. My mother lives in El Valle (barrio in Caracas), they have no idea what life is like for the humble people in Venezuela” he said, whilst complaining that the opposition’s parade was “dirtying up” the city by throwing leaflets that nobody wanted onto the road. “The government is going to have to clean this up now,” he said, shaking his head. I refrained from making the observation that this is, in effect, what they have been doing for the past 13 years.
The main problem is that Capriles came to deliver a message that has already been heard about a million times before. “There is a path,” he cries emphatically, without declaring what it is or where it might lead. Although such an explanation would no doubt prove to be superfluous, because Venezuela’s popular sectors are already familiar with the terrain, length and breadth of this path, because they walked it about 22 years ago. So they chose to build a different path in 1998, and then every year after that.
It is crucial that at this particular historical juncture, when the planet’s climate is increasingly volatile and with more wars than ever waged in pursuit of the planet’s increasingly scarce resources, that the world’s exploited become aware of the fact that other paths are possible and they are in fact being constructed. And hopefully this will happen before the planet is militarily devastated in a bid to preserve the socio-economic system that Mr Radonski continues to cling to in his election campaign.
Study: EPA-approved GMO insecticide responsible for killing off bees, contaminating entire food chain
Monday, April 9, 2012
Early last year, leaked documents obtained by a Colorado beekeeper exposed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency‘s (EPA) illegitimate approval of clothianidin, a highly-toxic pesticide manufactured by Bayer CropScience that the regulatory agency knew was capable of killing off bees (http://www.naturalnews.com/030921_EPA_pesticides.html).
Now, a new study out of Purdue University in Indiana has not only confirmed, once again, that clothianidin is killing off bees, but also that clothianidin’s toxicity is systemic throughout the entire food chain, which could one day lead to the catastrophic destruction of the food supply.
The study, which was published in the online journal PLoS ONE, investigated the various methods and routes by which a class of insecticides known as neonicotinoids, which includes clothianidin, are harming honey bees. They discovered that both clothianidin and thiamethoxam, another component of neonicotinoid insecticides, persist in “extremely high levels” in planter exhaust material produced during the planting of crops treated with these insecticides, which runs contrary to industry claims that the chemicals biodegrade and are not a threat.
The research team also found neonicotinoid compounds in soil, including in fields where the chemicals were not even sprayed, as well as on various plants and flowers visited by bees. Based on their analysis, the researchers involved with the study determined that bees actively transfer contaminated pollen from primarily neonicotinoid-treated corn crops, and bring it back to their hives. The bees also transfer neonicotinoid compounds to other plants and crops not treated with the chemicals, which shows just how persistent these chemicals truly are in the environment.
can read the entire report for yourself at the following
“This research should nail the coffin lid shut on clothianidin,” said Laurel Hopwood, chairwoman of the Sierra Club‘sGenetic Engineering Action Team, who is petitioning the EPA to finally ban these chemicals after years of needless delay. “Despite numerous attempts by the beekeeping industry and conservation organizations to persuade the EPA to ban clothianidin, the EPA has failed to protect the food supply for the American people.”
Without bees, which are now dying off at an alarming rate due to exposure to clothianidin and various other insecticides and fungicides, one third or more of the food supply will be destroyed, including at least 100 varieties of fruits and vegetables that rely on bees for pollination. This is why Dr. Neil Carman, Ph.D., scientific advisor to Sierra Club, has put out a call for the EPA to immediately ban the use of clothianidin and the other neonicotinoid insecticides for the sake of protecting the food supply from irreversible destruction.
The Fuel Pools of Fukushima: THE GREATEST SHORT-TERM THREAT TO HUMANITY
by Washington's Blog
Global Research, April 9, 2012
We noted days after the Japanese earthquake that the biggest threat was from the spent fuel rods in the fuel pool at Fukushima unit number 4, and not from the reactors themselves. See this and this.
We noted in February:
Scientists say that there is a 70% chance of a magnitude 7.0 earthquake hitting Fukushima this year, and a 98% chance within the next 3 years.
Given that nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen says that an earthquake of 7.0 or larger could cause the entire fuel pool structure collapse, it is urgent that everything humanly possible is done to stabilize the structure housing the fuel pools at reactor number 4.
Tepco is doing some construction at the building … it is a race against time under very difficult circumstances, and hopefully Tepco will win.
As AP points out:
The structural integrity of the damaged Unit 4 reactor building has long been a major concern among experts because a collapse of its spent fuel cooling pool could cause a disaster worse than the three reactor meltdowns.
Gundersen (who used to build spent fuel pools) explains that there is no protection surrounding the radioactive fuel in the pools. He warns that – if the fuel pools at reactor 4 collapse due to an earthquake – people should get out of Japan, and residents of the West Coast of America and Canada should shut all of their windows and stay inside for a while.
The fuel pool number 4 is apparently not in great shape, and there have already been countless earthquakes near the Fukushima region since the 9.0 earthquake last March.
Germany’s ZDF tv quotes nuclear engineer Yukitero Naka as saying:
If another earthquake occurs then the building [number 4] could collapse and another chain reaction could very likely occur.
(Unit 4 contains plutonium as well as other radioactive wastes.)
Mainchi reported on Monday:
The storage pool in the No. 4 reactor building has a total of 1,535 fuel rods, or 460 tons of nuclear fuel, in it. The 7-story building itself has suffered great damage, with the storage pool barely intact on the building’s third and fourth floors. The roof has been blown away. If the storage pool breaks and runs dry, the nuclear fuel inside will overheat and explode, causing a massive amount of radioactive substances to spread over a wide area. Both the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and French nuclear energy company Areva have warned about this risk.
A report released in February by the Independent Investigation Commission on the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Accident stated that the storage pool of the plant’s No. 4 reactor has clearly been shown to be “the weakest link” in the parallel, chain-reaction crises of the nuclear disaster. The worse-case scenario drawn up by the government includes not only the collapse of the No. 4 reactor pool, but the disintegration of spent fuel rods from all the plant’s other reactors. If this were to happen, residents in the Tokyo metropolitan area would be forced to evacuate.
Former Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Sumio Mabuchi, who was appointed to the post of then Prime Minister Naoto Kan’s advisor on the nuclear disaster immediately after its outbreak, proposed the injection of concrete from below the No. 4 reactor to the bottom of the storage pool, Chernobyl-style.
“Because sea water was being pumped into the reactor, the soundness of the structure (concrete corrosion and deterioration) was questionable. There also were doubts about the calculations made on earthquake resistance as well,” said one government source familiar with what took place at the time. “[F]uel rod removal will take three years. Will the structure remain standing for that long?
Asahi noted last month that - if Unit 4 pool gets a crack from an earthquake and leaks, it would be the end for Tokyo.
Kevin Kamps said last month:
Unit 4 storage pool… The entire building is listing including the pool. What they have is steel jacks underneath the pool to try to keep the floor from falling out or the pool from flipping over.
If that cooling water supply is lost, it will be just a few hours at most before that waste is on fire. 135 tons outside of any radioactive containment. They would be direct releases into the environment. 100% of cesium-137 could be released to the environment.
Former U.N. adviser Akio Matsumura – whose praises have been sung by Mikhail Gorbachev, U.S. Ambassadors Stephen Bosworth and Glenn Olds, and former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State and Goldman Sachs co-chair John C. Whitehead – notes:
The unit suffered enormous damage during the tsunami—a hydrogen explosion blew the roof off, leaving the highly radioactive fuel pool exposed to the open air. If another high level earthquake hits the area, the building will certainly collapse. Japanese and American meteorologists have predicted that such a strong earthquake is indeed likely to hit this year.
The meltdown and unprecedented release of radiation that would ensue is the worst case scenario that then-Prime Minister Kan and other former officials have discussed in the past months. He warned during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos that such an accident would force the evacuation of the 35 million people in Tokyo, close half of Japan and compromise the nation’s sovereignty. Such a humanitarian and environmental catastrophe is unimaginable. Hiroshi Tasaka, a nuclear engineer and special adviser to Prime Minister Kan immediately following the crisis, said the crisis “just opened Pandora’s Box.”
The current Japanese government has not yet mentioned the looming disaster, ostensibly to not incite panic in the public. Nevertheless, action must be taken quickly. This website over the last year has published a running commentary from scientists explaining why Reactor 4 must be stabilized immediately, who might be able to accomplish such a task, and why the situation has largely gone unnoticed. We believe an independent, international team of structural engineers and other advisers must be assembled and deployed immediately. Mounting public pressure would force the Japanese government to take action. We hope these resources are helpful in educating the public about the crisis that we face.
As the eminent German physicist Dr. Hans-Peter Durr said ten months ago, if the spent fuel pool spills, we will be in a situation where science never imagined we could be.
Matsumura was told that if the fuel pool at unit 4 collapses or the water spills out, so much radiation will spew out for 50 years that no one will be able to approach Fukushima:
Even more dramatically, Matsumura writes:
Japan’s former Ambassador to Switzerland, Mr. Mitsuhei Murata, was invited to speak at the Public Hearing of the Budgetary Committee of the House of Councilors on March 22, 2012, on the Fukushima nuclear power plants accident. Before the Committee, Ambassador Murata strongly stated that if the crippled building of reactor unit 4—with 1,535 fuel rods in the spent fuel pool 100 feet (30 meters) above the ground—collapses, not only will it cause a shutdown of all six reactors but will also affect the common spent fuel pool containing 6,375 fuel rods, located some 50 meters from reactor 4. In both cases the radioactive rods are not protected by a containment vessel; dangerously, they are open to the air. This would certainly cause a global catastrophe like we have never before experienced. He stressed that the responsibility of Japan to the rest of the world is immeasurable. Such a catastrophe would affect us all for centuries. Ambassador Murata informed us that the total numbers of the spent fuel rods at the Fukushima Daiichi site excluding the rods in the pressure vessel is 11,421 (396+615+566+1,535+994+940+6375).
I asked top spent-fuel pools expert Mr. Robert Alvarez, former Senior Policy Adviser to the Secretary and Deputy Assistant Secretary for National Security and the Environment at the U.S. Department of Energy, for an explanation of the potential impact of the 11,421 rods.
I received an astounding response from Mr. Alvarez [updated 4/5/12]:
In recent times, more information about the spent fuel situation at the Fukushima-Dai-Ichi site has become known. It is my understanding that of the 1,532 spent fuel assemblies in reactor No. 304 assemblies are fresh and unirradiated. This then leaves 1,231 irradiated spent fuel rods in pool No. 4, which contain roughly 37 million curies (~1.4E+18 Becquerel) of long-lived radioactivity. The No. 4 pool is about 100 feet above ground, is structurally damaged and is exposed to the open elements. If an earthquake or other event were to cause this pool to drain this could result in a catastrophic radiological fire involving nearly 10 times the amount of Cs-137 released by the Chernobyl accident.
The infrastructure to safely remove this material was destroyed as it was at the other three reactors. Spent reactor fuel cannot be simply lifted into the air by a crane as if it were routine cargo. In order to prevent severe radiation exposures, fires and possible explosions, it must be transferred at all times in water and heavily shielded structures into dry casks.. As this has never been done before, the removal of the spent fuel from the pools at the damaged Fukushima-Dai-Ichi reactors will require a major and time-consuming re-construction effort and will be charting in unknown waters. Despite the enormous destruction cased at the Da–Ichi site, dry casks holding a smaller amount of spent fuel appear to be unscathed.
Based on U.S. Energy Department data, assuming a total of 11,138 spent fuel assemblies are being stored at the Dai-Ichi site, nearly all, which is in pools. They contain roughly 336 million curies (~1.2 E+19 Bq) of long-lived radioactivity. About 134 million curies is Cesium-137 — roughly 85 times the amount of Cs-137 released at the Chernobyl accident as estimated by the U.S. National Council on Radiation Protection (NCRP). The total spent reactor fuel inventory at the Fukushima-Daichi site contains nearly half of the total amount of Cs-137 estimated by the NCRP to have been released by all atmospheric nuclear weapons testing, Chernobyl, and world-wide reprocessing plants (~270 million curies or ~9.9 E+18 Becquerel).
It is important for the public to understand that reactors that have been operating for decades, such as those at the Fukushima-Dai-Ichi site have generated some of the largest concentrations of radioactivity on the planet.
Many of our readers might find it difficult to appreciate the actual meaning of the figure, yet we can grasp what 85 times more Cesium-137 than the Chernobyl would mean. It would destroy the world environment and our civilization. This is not rocket science, nor does it connect to the pugilistic debate over nuclear power plants. This is an issue of human survival.
There was a Nuclear Security Summit Conference in Seoul on March 26 and 27, and Ambassador Murata and I made a concerted effort to find someone to inform the participants from 54 nations of the potential global catastrophe of reactor unit 4. We asked several participants to share the idea of an Independent Assessment team comprised of a broad group of international experts to deal with this urgent issue.
I would like to introduce Ambassador Murata’s letter to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to convey this urgent message and also his letter to Japan’s Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda for Japanese readers. He emphasized in the statement that we should bring human wisdom to tackle this unprecedented challenge.
Ambassador Murata’s letter says:
It is no exaggeration to say that the fate of Japan and the whole world depends on NO.4 reactor. This is confirmed by most reliable experts like Dr. Arnie Gundersen or Dr. Fumiaki Koide.
Anti-nuclear physician Dr. Helen Caldicott says that if fuel pool 4 collapses, she will evacuate her family from Boston and move them to the Southern Hemisphere. This is an especially dramatic statement given that the West Coast is much more directly in the path of Fukushima radiation than the East Coast.
Will humanity rise to the occasion, and figure out how to stabilize fuel pool number 4 before catastrophe strikes?
Or will modern civilization win a Darwin award for failing to pay attention to the real threats?
From the Cold War to NATO's "Humanitarian Wars" - The Complicity of the United Nations
by Mahdi Darius Nazemroaya
Global Research, April 4, 2012
Humanitarian wars, especially under the guise of the “Responsibility to Protect (R2P),” are a modern form of imperialism. The standard pattern that the United States and its allies use to execute them is one where genocide and ethnic cleansing are vociferously alleged by a coalition of governments, media organizations, and non-governmental front organizations. The allegations – often lurid and unfounded – then provide moral and diplomatic cover for a variety of sanctions that undermine and isolate the target country in question, and thereby pave the way for military intervention. This is the post-Cold War modus operandi of the US and NATO.
In facilitating this neo-imperialism, the United Nations has been complicit in the hijacking of its own posts and offices by Washington.
Former UN secretary-general Kofi Annan has been appointed a “special peace envoy” with a mediating role in Syria. Yet, how can Annan be evaluated as an “honest broker” considering his past instrumental role in developing the doctrine of R2P – the very pretext that has served to facilitate several US/NATO criminal wars of aggression? Furthermore, the evidence attests that the US and its allies – despite mouthing support for Annan’s supposed peace plan – are not interested in a mediated, peaceful solution in Syria.
From the Cold War to Humanitarian Wars
As the Cold War began to wind down in the late-1980s and early-1990s, NATO saw the opportunity that would arise from the geopolitical vacuum following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the dissolution of the Eastern Bloc. Not only did NATO begin transforming from a defensive organization into an offensive military body, the US-led alliance began to embrace a supposed humanitarian mandate for this purpose. It is through this purported embrace of humanitarianism that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was able to change into an offensive, interventionist military force – indeed the largest such force ever in the history of the world.
NATO’s biggest military operation up until a decade after the Cold War was the First Persian Gulf War following the invasion in 1991 of Kuwait by Iraqi forces under the command of Saddam Hussein. The invasion of Kuwait by Iraq, at the time a US ally, was mired in a territorial oil dispute over colonial-era borders to which Washington at first appeared to show cool indifference. Immediately after Iraqi forces entered Kuwait, however, a strident US government and media campaign was mounted claiming the sanctity of Kuwait’s sovereign territory and the “defence of small nations.” There were also lurid media reports – later shown to be fabrications – of atrocities committed by Iraqi troops, such as the butchering of babies taken from hospital incubators. The international public was successfully manipulated to accept a US-led war against Iraq to ironically liberate the Emirate of Kuwait only to reinstate an absolute and despotic monarch.
Equipped with UN resolutions, the US-led NATO powers – along with a “coalition of willing” Arab states – launched a war on Iraq supposedly in the name of “humanitarianism.” Operations exclusively run by several NATO powers in Iraqi Kurdistan would also become the basis for NATO’s future humanitarian mandates. The precedent and tempo was now set for NATO’s subsequent “humanitarian” wars. The no-fly zones and legal semantics that were innovated by the Western powers to justify their intervention in Iraq were also applied by these same powers with regard to the former Yugoslavia. Variants of this humanitarian pretext for war included “upholding international law” and “international security” and were deployed for the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001 and again against Iraq in 2003 – the Second Persian Gulf War – this time to justify the all-out conquest of that country. The same rhetorical justification for military intervention was used by NATO powers to unleash a seven-month aerial bombing campaign in Libya in 2011 that led to the overthrow of the government and to the murder of the country’s leader Muammar Qaddafi. The thematic R2P is currently being amplified to decibel levels by NATO state governments and mainstream media with regard to Syria, where a NATO-led intervention is also covertly underway.
Yugoslavia: Srebrenica’s Sacrifice for NATO Intervention
On July 11, 1995, the forces of the Bosnian Serbs would march into the so-called UN Srebrenica Safe Area. The official NATO narrative is that UN troops agreed to withdraw from Srebrenica and let the Bosnian Serb forces take care of the local Bosniaks, but that once the Bosnian Serbs entered the area they proceeded to slaughter 8,000 Bosniaks. This would be billed as the worst massacre in Europe since the Second World War.
In reality, the events of Srebrenica would be used and warped to justify a massive NATO response on the basis of public outrage. Bosniak leaders would also refuse to give the Red Cross the names of people who had fled Srebrenica, thus resulting in an inflated number of missing people. The number of the dead would later turn out to be significantly lower than originally reported. Media estimates also changed over time. The most senior UN official inside Bosnia-Herzegovina, Philip Corwin, would also lend his voice to those saying that the events in Srebrenica were distorted for political gain and military intervention by NATO.
Then US President Bill Clinton had actually instructed Alija Izetbegovic that 5,000 Bosniaks would need to be sacrificed to bring NATO into the war as a combatant. Surviving members of the Bosniak delegation from Srebrenica have stated on the record that Izetbegovic said that NATO would militarily intervene against the Republika Srpska if at least 5,000 dead bodies could be produced. The Fall of Srebrenica, a UN report issued on November 15, 1999, casually mentions this in paragraph 115. The Bosniak police chief of Srebrenica has also confirmed Clinton’s demand for a “sacrifice” from Izetbegovic to open the doors for NATO attacks against the Bosnian Serbs.
In the Bosnian War, all sides committed horrific atrocities. The crime of the Bosnian Serbs that appeared to rouse NATO was not ethnic cleansing. The crime of the Bosnian Serbs was that they were fighting to preserve Yugoslavia. Even Croats and Bosniaks in both Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina who wanted to preserve Yugoslavia and inter-ethnic peace were targeted, demonized, or killed. For example, the Bosniak Fikret Abdic was charged as a war criminal in Croatia after he fled Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Josip Rejhl-Kir, the Croat police chief of Osijek, was murdered by Croat nationalists for working to preserve the harmony between Croats and Croatian Serbs.
NATO intervened in Bosnia-Herzegovina to change the balance of power. The Bosnian Serbs were up until then the superior military force. Had NATO powers not internationalized the fighting and intervened, the Bosnian Serbs would have taken control of the country and maintained it as an integral part of Yugoslavia. This would have crippled or halted Euro-Atlantic expansion in the Balkans.
On January 15, 1999, the fighting in Racak between Serbian forces and the outlawed Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), which the US State Department itself labelled a terrorist organization, would be used to paint a similar picture of genocide and ethnic cleansing to justify war. By this time, the Serbs had successfully been demonized by NATO and the media as the perpetrators of ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia, so NATO’s efforts to vilify the Serbs were made relatively easy. It is a matter of public record that US Secretary of State Madeline Albright and the KLA leadership were working to create a humanitarian pretext for intervention. It was in this context that the US and NATO had pressured the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to accept an arrangement where their military forces would leave Kosovo, but allowed the KLA to continue its attacks. This stoking of tensions is what NATO has tried to replicate in Syria through the so-called Free Syrian Army, which in reality is a terrorist organization linked to NATO and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
In the Arab World: Libya and Syria
In 2011, the humanitarian card would be played again by NATO, this time in the North African country of Libya. Colonel Qaddafi was accused of massacring his own people in Libya, particularly in Benghazi. Packaged with unverified claims of jet attacks and foreign mercenaries, this prompted the UN to permit the US and its NATO allies to impose another no-fly zone, as in Iraq and Yugoslavia. Illegally, the NATO powers arrogated the no-fly zone provision of UN Security Council Resolution 1973 to mount an aerial bombing campaign. The massive onslaught involving over 10,000 bombing missions was conducted in concert with NATO special forces and proxy militias on the ground. NATO warplanes targeted civilian population centres and civilian infrastructure, such as food stores and water and power utilities – acts that are war crimes under international law. Such a blatant campaign of state terrorism – obscenely in the name of “protecting human rights” – was instrumental in overthrowing the sovereign government in Tripoli and installing a proxy regime composed of an extremely volatile amalgam of opportunist para-militaries, terrorists, NATO intelligence operatives, and fractious tribal warlords. Recent reports of internecine bloodletting and revenge killing erupting across Libya, “post-NATO liberation,” attest to the real criminal enterprise of NATO’s regime change in Libya that was cynically perpetrated under the guise of protecting civilians.
Meanwhile, in Syria, the US and its cohorts have sought to replay the city of Homs like another Srebrenica, Racak, and Benghazi. They have sought to use the same tactic for inciting sectarian tensions and then blaming the government of President Bashar Al-Assad for conducting a “brutal crackdown.” The US and its allies are demanding that the Syrian Army stops fighting while the insurgent forces of the Syrian National Council’s Syrian Free Army are given a free hand to launch attacks, just as the NATO power demanded of the Yugoslav military while giving a green light to the KLA. Russian and Chinese demands that both sides observe a ceasefire offset this strategy.
What stands in the way of yet another NATO intervention is a firm resolve by Moscow and Beijing at the UN Security Council as well as the alliance between Syria and Iran. Damascus and its allies, however, should be wary of more traps to tie Syria down politically and legally through one-sided agreements. Nor should the Syrians place their trust in the United Nations to act as an “honest broker.”
Kofi Annan and the Responsibility to Protect (R2P)
Much praise is being given to Kofi Annan as the special envoy of both the Arab League and United Nations. There should, however, be caution applied when dealing with Annan. In this regard, his history with regard to humanitarian interventions needs to be assessed.
According to American diplomat Richard Holbrooke, who was intimately tied to the balkanization of Yugoslavia, Annan was one of the most supportive figures for US foreign policy in the Balkans. Annan was actually instrumental in helping to put together the R2P doctrine with Canadian diplomats. Furthermore, the Ghanaian-born career diplomat owes his rise to power to senior Washington connections and specifically to the events of Srebrenica and the fighting in the former Yugoslavia. Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali was pushed aside by Washington to make way for Annan as the head of the United Nations.
Kofi Annan is also openly supportive of R2P. He participated as a panelist in a discussion about R2P (The Responsibility to Protect – 10 Years On: Reflections on its Past, Present and Future) held at the University of Ottawa on November 4, 2011. A week prior to this event, Allan Rock, president of the University of Ottawa and former Canadian ambassador to the UN, together with Lloyd Axworthy, president of the University of Winnipeg and former Canadian foreign minister, co-authored an article about R2P in the Ottawa Citizen (October 25, 2011). Both Axworthy, who was on the panel with Annan, and Allan Rock praised the war in Libya, calling it a victory for R2P.
At the panel, Annan was joined by the decidedly pro-NATO Canadian parliamentarian Christopher Alexander. Alexander is the parliamentary secretary to Peter MacKay. Mackay is the current defence minister of Canada and has voiced support for open wars against Syria and Iran. Christopher Alexander was also a Canadian diplomat in Russia for several years, the former Canadian ambassador to NATO-garrisoned Afghanistan, and the deputy special representative of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). The R2P panel was moderated by Lyse Doucet, a correspondent for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and a friend of Alexander.
What is important to note about the R2P Ottawa panel is that it was largely supportive of R2P. Kofi Annan also voiced his support for NATO’s military intervention in Libya. When asked about using R2P in Syria, no firm answer was given by Annan. He did appear, however, to give his tacit support to intervention against Syria. Finally, both Annan and Axworthy proposed that regional organizations be given R2P mandates. For example, the African Union should be able to intervene on the behalf of the international community in African countries, such as Uganda and Sudan, or that the Arab League likewise be given an R2P mandate in countries, such as Syria.
These points are key factors. They should not be overlooked. Annan’s impartiality with regard to his latest pivotal task in Syria should be questioned, especially in light of his stated position on Libya and his generally supportive views for NATO military interventions.
Humanitarianism: The Face of Modern Imperialism
The NATO military interventions in Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, and Libya were and are colonial invasions masquerading as humanitarian endeavours. Moreover, what NATO did in Yugoslavia was to intervene incrementally to divide and conquer the country. According to General John Galvin, the former supreme commander of NATO, this was done because NATO officials knew that an all-out invasion during the disintegration of the country would result in a massive guerrilla war with high costs for NATO. It can also be added that such a NATO intervention would have had the inverse effect of unifying Yugoslavia instead of allowing the federal state to dissolve.
At the start of 2011, both Libya and Syria were holdouts to NATO’s Mediterranean Dialogue and they also had reservations about the EU’s Union for the Mediterranean (UfM). This effectively means that they were both resistant to Euro-Atlantic expansion. While popular protests in Bahrain and Jordan went unnoticed, all public eyes were directed by NATO state governments and corporate media towards Libya and Syria. This is because of imperialist interests to subvert both the latter Arab states – while the former mentioned states are allies and therefore must be bolstered despite their well-documented repressive conducts.
is on the march. Both NATO’s operations in the Balkans and the
Arab World are intended to expand the Euro-Atlantic Zone. Its
involvement in African Union missions in East Africa are also tied to
this. For all observers who take a detailed look at the restructuring
of states vanquished by NATO, this should be clear. Humanitarianism
has become the new face of modern imperialism.
secretary-general Kofi Annan is a man whose face fits the deceptive
humanitarian agenda of modern imperialism.

BP GULF OF MEXICO DISASTER: Environmental Contamination. Deadly Bacteria Found in Tar Balls
by Farron Cousins
Global Research, April 6, 2012
Since the very first tar balls began rolling onshore along the Gulf of Mexico following 2010’s Deepwater Horizon oilrig explosion and subsequent underwater oil geyser, the oil industry told us to relax because those tar balls were completely harmless. But as we approach the two year anniversary of the disaster, new studies have confirmed that the tar balls we’re seeing along our beaches contain bacteria that are capable of killing human beings.
The new study, conducted by scientists at Auburn University, confirmed the presence of a bacteria called Vibrio vulnificus. According to researchers, this is the same bacteria that is responsible for causing illness and death from eating bad oysters. The tar balls contained concentrations of this bacteria more than 100 times greater than the surrounding water. The Centers for Disease Control says the following regarding Vibrio vulnificus:
Wound infections may start as redness and swelling at the site of the wound that then can progress to affect the whole body. V. vulnificus typically causes a severe and life-threatening illness characterized by fever and chills, decreased blood pressure (septic shock), and blood-tinged blistering skin lesions (hemorrhagic bullae). Overall, V. vulnificus infections are fatal about 40 percent of the time. Wound infections with V. vulnificus are fatal about 20 percent of the time, and aggressive surgical treatment can prevent death.
Persons who have immunocompromising conditions and especially persons with chronic liver disease are particularly at risk for V. vulnificus infection when they eat raw or undercooked seafood, particularly shellfish harvested from the Gulf of Mexico, or if they bathe a cut or scrape in marine waters. About three-quarters of patients with V. vulnificus infections have known underlying hepatic disease or other immunocompromising illness. Otherwise healthy persons are at much lower risk of V. vulnificus infection.
It is important to remember that this isn’t a fleeting threat to those of us who live, work and play along the Gulf Coast. National Geographic recently pointed out that tarballs are continuously washing up along the coasts of the Gulf of Mexico, meaning that the threat of bacterial infection is not only real, but it is persistent. And with Spring Break season in high gear, beaches along the Gulf Coast are currently inundated with out of state families playing and relaxing on top of these toxic bacteria balls.
And again, we’ve been reassured time and time again from the oil industry, particularly BP, that these tar balls do not pose a single threat to human health.
A recent out of court settlement between the victims of the oil spill and BP provides for medical monitoring—meaning that the company will set aside money to pay for future medical expenses related to their disaster—which is somewhat reassuring for those who are walking on bacteria balls daily. But as temperatures rise along the Gulf Coast, more and more families and children are heading to the beach, not knowing of the toxic threat that is lurking beneath their feet.
Shock Obama Move Gives All Water in America To US Military
March 24, 2012
By: Sorcha Faal, and as reported to her Western Subscribers
An alarming new report prepared by the Federal Water Resources Agency of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment circulating in the Kremlin today states that United States President Obama has given control over all water in America to his military forces in what Russian officials deem an “unprecedented attack” against the freedom of human beings to have access to what is unquestionable our planets most vital life sustaining substance next to the air we breathe.
According to this report, on 16 March, Obama enacted what is called an Executive Order titled National Defense Resources Preparedness that amended the Defense Production Act of 1950 which is, in essence, a law designed to give the American President total dictatorial powers in cases of national emergencies or war.
The Defense Production Act of 1950 contains three major sections. The first authorizes the President to require businesses to sign contracts or fulfill orders deemed necessary for national defense. The second authorizes the President to establish mechanisms (such as regulations, orders or agencies) to allocate materials, services and facilities to promote national defense. The third section authorizes the President to control the civilian economy so that scarce and/or critical materials necessary to the national defense effort are available for defense needs.
The Act also authorizes the President to requisition property, force industry to expand production and the supply of basic resources, impose wage and price controls, settle labor disputes, control consumer and real estate credit, establish contractual priorities, and allocate raw materials to aid the national defense.
Obama’s shock move in quietly, and with little fanfare, issuing this Executive Order has disturbed many in America including the highly respected Zerohedge.Com blog that noted the terrifying expansion of US federal power over its own citizens and, in part, stated: “Taken in conjunction with the NSA’s new Utah spy center (which will collect and archive the complete contents of every email, tweet, Facebook post, Google search, phone call, and text message) and the National Defense Authorization Act, it’s clear that the Obama administration is expecting trouble from within.”
According to this report, however, the most chilling part of Obama’s Executive Order was his giving power over all water recourses in the United States to his Department of Defense instead of to emergency, health and/or agricultural agencies one would normally expect to be put in charge of this most vital resource.
Most interesting to note about Obama’s move, this report continues, is that six days after (22 March) giving his military control over all water resources in America, and on World Water Day no less, US intelligence officials released a report warning that the “struggle over access to water supplies could spark global war in the next few decades.”
To how far off the first of these “water wars” may be, this report warns, is on the very doorstop of America as its southern neighbor Mexico is experiencing its worst drought in modern history that has already destroyed some 7.5 million acres (3 million hectares) of cultivable land (an area about the size of Belgium), killed 60,000 head of cattle and weakened 2 million more livestock, and pushed food prices up at least 35% in the past 12 months alone.
Of even greater concern to the US, this report continues, are the growing signs of “water wars” being prepared for among the various American States, especially those in its western regions whose populations are continuing to grow while their access to water is being cut due to drought and mismanagement.
Even more chilling, this report notes, is that whatever the Obama regime is planning for, US authorities are certainly preparing for the worst as their Homeland Security Department this past fortnight put in an order for 450 million rounds of .40 caliber ammunition for its internal police forces and reports are now surfacing that their government has further told the makers of 5.56 caliber military surplus ammunition to stop selling to venders and civilians as they need it all for themselves.
Not just the Obama regime is arming itself to the teeth either, this report says, as new reports from the United States show that its citizens are in equal measure buying guns and ammunition in such unprecedented numbers that Sturm, Ruger & Co., one of the world’s largest arms manufacturers, had to suspend new orders after taking orders for more than 1 million guns in the first three months of the year.
With US Troops described as “stressed to the breaking point” from Americas over decade-long wars, and growing numbers of US Marines said to be turning against their Commander-In-Chief Obama, especially after they were disarmed in a war zone for the first time in history last week before meeting with US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta during his trip to Helmond Province, Afghanistan, Russian experts note that America may indeed be “ripe” for a revolution.
Those Russian experts in this report warning that the US may be nearing a revolution note the many similarities now occurring in Americas “Occupy Protests” that mirror those of the “Arab Spring” that have brought down governments throughout North Africa and the Middle East with the “last stage” to occur when Obama regime forces begin arming those forces loyal to them in order to completely destroy the United States once and for all.
Not being remembered by many Americans is that during his 2008 campaign for the US Presidency Obama said: “We cannot continue to rely only on our military…we’ve got to have a civilian security force just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded. We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set.”
To how Obama would raise his private army it is believed by many to have been included in his controversial national health care law called “Obamacare” and as we can, in part, read as reported by the Canada Free Press:
“Section 5210 of the Patient’s Protection and Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare) may be the beginning of Obama’s civilian security force. This section amends Section 203 of the U.S. Public Health Service Act. Why it was included in the massive health care bill is a question in search of meaningful answers. Judge Andrew Napolitano from FOX News has a few questions of his own.
The new law says “The purpose of the Ready Reserve Corps is to fulfill the need to have additional Commissioned Corps personnel available on short notice (similar to the uniformed service’s reserve program) to assist regular Commissioned Corps personnel to meet both routine public health and emergency response missions.”
The law requires the Ready Reserve to participate in “routine training” to meet the general and specific needs of the Commissioned Corps. The Ready Reserve “shall” be ready for involuntary calls to active duty. The Ready Reserve must be prepared to respond to orders from the President to go anywhere in the country, or anywhere outside the country.”
To whatever may be the final outcome in these events it is not in our knowing, other than to state the obvious that when any governments internal security police orders half-a-billion rounds of ammunition they are most certainly note preparing for peaceful times…so neither should anyone else.
